How To Get Started
If you are a teacher, and you would like to use the contest for one or more classes:
- First register yourself as a user by clicking on "Create new account" in the sidebar on the right and following the instructions. You can choose whatever username you would like.
- Once you're registered and logged in, you should try making a forecast or two yourself, just to see how it works. Most people will want to forecast for the site closest to them (use the map on the home page), but you can try any site. Click on the marker, then click on the site name in the balloon to go to the page for that location. Or you can select the site from the "Forecasting Sites" menu at the top of the page. Scroll down the page to the "Enter a Forecast" section. Enter values for Tmax, Tmin and precipitation amount, then click the Submit button. After making a forecast, come back the next day to see how your forecast is doing against the observations so far (click on the "Today" tab). Check back the day after that to see your score for that day.
- Read the Using the Contest in Class page and think about how you might like to use the contest in your class(es).
- When you're ready to set up one or more classes, go to the Register a Class page. Enter information for one class at a time and click the Submit button. We'll take that information and set up your class as a separate "division", and send you an e-mail to let you know that it's ready. Your students can then log in with the starter password that you selected, and they should each change to a personal password by clicking on "My account" in the right sidebar. They can begin submitting forecasts for any site right away.
- Once the students begin forecasting, check the page for the site you are using often to see how things are going. To get an overview of the forecasts your students are making, go to the Class Summaries page. Students will appear in that list the next day after they submit their first forecast.
- If you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to use the Contact page.
