FC in Minneapolis

We've spent the last three days at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) regional conference in Minneapolis. We had a nice time talking with teachers at the Forecast Central booth, most of them earth science teachers in middle school or high school, but there were a few elementary school teachers as well. It was interesting that many teachers told us that they already have been having their students try their hand at forecasting, but they found it difficult to do, so they were excited to hear about Forecast Central.

heat vs temperature

The difference between heat and temperature is- heat is the amount of energy in a system and temperature is the measure of the average molecular motion in a system.

Weather Discussion for 10/11 - 10-17

Summary for Week:

Climate norms for near Rome NY this week:

High Temp: 58 F
Low Temp: 39 F
Precip for week: 0.8"
Snowfall: 0 (average snow fall for month about .8" with max about 6")

There will be general cooling trend this week. Temperature will start of a couple of degrees below normal but be around 10 degrees below normal by the end of the week. A killing fronts is likely by Monday. Rain showers moves in Tuesday and again later in the week on Thursday (maybe some wet snow on hill tops).

Sunday - Monday

A Reinforcing cold front passes through, our CNY today (Sunday's weather map: http://hss-1.us/fcst/maps/20091012_8AM_EDT.gif ). A cold high pressure will build southeastward behind the coldfront out of Canada over the next 36 hours, bringing with it dry weather and the coldest airmass of the autumn season thus far, to the Northeast US. A widespread killing fronts is likely by Monday morning. Monday should be a sunny pleasant day but temperature will be slightly below normal for this time of year as with high pressure will dominate our weather. However temperature will be slightly(Monday's weather map: http://hss-1.us/fcst/maps/20091012_8AM_EDT.gif ).

Tuesday

Our next weather maker approaches Monday night in the form of a Southeastward moving low pressure wave that will drag additional cold air down from Canada early Tuesday. Rain showers are likely with this event on Tuesday. Right now it looks like it will be cold enough for hilltops above 600 feet MSL to have some wet snow showers mixing in with the rain showers, though no accumulation is expected.

Wednesday - Thursday

This looks to be a dry weather period as high pressure builds into the area. Clouds will increase late on Thursday with the approach of the next storm system (low pressure system)

Friday - Saturday

A complex slow moving low pressure system will slowly move through our area bring period of rain and snow from Friday thought Sunday. Temperatures will likely be warm enough for mostly rain, but temperature will be cooler than normal and snow is possible, especially above 500 feet MSL. If you are interested in forecasting the first inch of snow to fall at Rome NY, need to keep an eye on this situation.

Forecast Discussion for 10/9/2009

A sfc low pres currently over srn Ohio/West Virginia, has the bulk of activity precipitation west of sfc low. This low will track northeast, just east of CNY, across eastern Pa and into southern New England by Saturday morning. This will give us a cloud rainy period Fri night into the first half of Saturday. The total storm rainfall amount will range from 1" in the eastern portion of NY to about 0.5" in CNY. High temperatures will be in the mid 50's during the afternoon, with low temperature in the upper 30's at night. Another system will move in from the west Sunday night giving us a good chance for light precipitation, with even a slight chance that some wet snow flakes will mix in. But no accumulations are expected with this system.
